October 2008
National Crime Prevention Month
Crime prevention month gives communities across the country an opportunity to band together, stand up for what is right, and stress that crime is one visitor that is never welcome in their neighborhoods. This display has information on how you can protect yourself and your family from crime. There are several ideas to help you motivate your community and get law enforcement involved.
Children’s Magazine Month
Children's Magazine Month is a special annual celebration to inspire family literacy events around the world during October and throughout the year. Children's magazines are among the most powerful literacy resources for teachers and librarians, and for moms and dads who want to help their children learn to read and improve their reading skills. Remember your own special joy of reading magazines as a child. Few treasures brighten a child's eyes and smile, engage their curiosity, and sharpen their knowledge like a magazine - full of color and dreams. Join the celebration by reaching out to help a child know the joy of magazines.
National Animal Safety and Protection Month
All animals play a vital role in our society whether we are aware of it or not. During the month of October we reflect on ways to take good care of our pets. With an understanding of how to promote animal safety and protection, we are better equipped to show we care.
National Domestic Violence Awareness Month
No one should be a victim of domestic violence…ever…period. But it does happen– and when it does, there is help. Domestic Violence was first observed in October 1981 by the National Coalition against Domestic Violence. The intent was to rally women advocates across the nation to end violence against women and their children. This display identifies books and provides information to better understand domestic violence and help those affected by it.
National Communicate with Your Kids Month
Although you should communicate with your child about everyday life, October is a time for communicating with your children about things that affect them. In this display you will find several topics you can discuss with your child as well as how you may be able to help them. There are also some tips on communicating with your children.
