Monthly Exhibits

February 2008

National Black History Month
Every February, throughout the country, we commemorate past and present achievements of African Americans. Black History Month was first promoted in 1926 by Dr. Carter G. Woodsman, who then named a week-long observance "Negro History Week" to honor the history and contributions of African Americans to American life. In 1976 Black History Week was expanded to a month in honor of the Nation's bicentennial. Our display reviews the origins of Black History Month and provides information and resources on African Americans and their accomplishments.

American Heart Month
The month of February is also designated American Heart Month as part of a campaign to enhance public awareness of heart disease and ways to prevent it. This campaign urges Americans to join the battle against heart disease. Our display includes information on the symptoms of heart attacks and strokes. It also identifies some of the resources available through the Library on this topic.

National Weddings Month
Wedding planning is also popular during February. Our display features resources to help you plan your wedding with expert advice.
