April 2009

Alcohol Awareness Month

During April we recognize the serious problem of alcohol abuse.  Although, alcohol is a legal drug, addiction is a common problem and brings with it many social and psychological difficulties.  April 6, 2009 marks the annual observance of National Alcohol Screening Day (NASD). At locations across the United States, people can be screened—anonymously—to see if their drinking habits may be risky. Our display has several books and information that may help you understand and deal with alcoholism.

Financial Literacy Month
National Financial Literacy Month, which is recognized in April, is a time to highlight the importance of financial literacy and teach Americans how to establish and maintain healthy financial habits. During this month take the time to learn on how you can control your finances.  This is also a perfect time to teach your children the importance of saving for their future.

National Autism Awareness Month

National Autism Awareness Month was established in 1972 by the Autism Society of America (ASA). The observance provides an opportunity for the ASA, its State chapters, and others in the autism community to educate the public about this disorder. The high rate of autism among all races, ethnicities, and social groups points to a greater need for education, particularly with regard to the early diagnosis of this complex developmental disorder. National Garden Month
April is National Garden Month. With a tough economy and concerns about global warming, pollution, and health on the rise, April is the perfect time to kick off some new habits that respond to these issues, while making your lifestyle healthier and your community stronger. By focusing on your own yard and neighborhood, there are a number of simple things you can do to green up your lifestyle and the planet, starting today!

National Poetry Month

National Poetry Month is a month-long, national celebration of poetry established by the Academy of American Poets. Its purpose is to promote the attention of individuals and the media to the art of poetry, to living poets, and to poetry books and journals of wide aesthetic range and concern.  An appreciation of poetry helps us cultivate self expression and creativity.

Library Entertainment

During the month of April the library will be having several activities; movies, book discussions and even a basic Japanese class. Come on over and take a look at the youth services display to see what’s going on.
