April 2008
National Child Abuse Prevention Month
April has been chosen as child abuse awareness
month, to remind people that they should be
alert to signs of child abuse all year round.
Too many children suffer from child abuse in
our country. In 2004 an estimated 1,490 child
fatalities were reported due to child abuse.
You may be able to help by putting a stop to
the abuse. Our display identifies ways to tell if
a child is being abused, lists where you can
report suspected child abuse, and provides
resources on this issue of increasing concern.
It may help someone you know.
NationalSexually Transmitted Diseases (STD’s) Education and
Awareness Month
There is a common
misconception that STD’s are
under control in the USA when in
fact STD’s infect at least 55 million
Americans (one in four
adults)
and are spreading at the
rate of 12
million new cases each
year.
Studies show that two-
thirds of
new infections are in
people
under 25 and
one-fourth are in teenagers.
Education and Awareness
can help one not
become one of those cases. This
display showcases books
concerning all
types of STD’s and their prevention.
National Landscape Architecture Month
The American Society of
Landscape Architects (ASLA)
has proclaimed April as
National Landscape
Architecture Month. ASLA
chapters across the country
will celebrate with public
outreach activities to help
school-aged children and
educators "Discover Careers
in Landscape Architecture".
The month encompasses Earth Day on April 22 and the birthday of Frederick
Law Olmsted on April 26, who founded the American landscape architecture
profession.
National Sexual Assault Prevention and Awareness Month
April is also designated as Sexual Assault Prevention Month, an opportunity
to focus on sexual violence and its prevention. Activities during this month
highlight the efforts of individuals and agencies that provide rape
intervention and prevention services while offering support to assault
survivors, victims, and their families. Our display lists books and other
resources on sexual assault and on how not to become a victim.
National Kite Month
